If you’re a connoisseur for the finer things in life and expect the best, be it in clothing, shoes, or even cuisine then you might also be interested in the elite end of interior and lighting design. Many of the world’s top designers have turned their hand to lighting design at one time or another, so read on to get a flavour of some of the most iconic designer lighting available from leading brands such as Flos, Anglepoise, or Moooi.
Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was a Danish architect and designer known for his work designing modern minimalist buildings in Scandinavia, and was therefore a key proponent in the post war Scandinavian design movement. He is also known for his furniture and product design, in particular his various chairs, including the ‘Seven’ series chair that made pioneering use of the manufacturing technique of being able to fold plywood in 3 dimensions. He also designed the ‘AJ table lamp’ (below) a unique, angular take on the classic desk lamp design. This design is still popular today and available in both desk and table formats.
Marcel Wanders (born 1963) first came to public attention in the mid 90s with his ‘Knotted Chair’ a curious piece that combined high tech materials with low tech production methods. As his career has progressed Wanders has continued with this approach, often adding references to familiar, or historical styles to otherwise modern pieces designed in modern materials. Both with his own brand ‘Moooi’ and on conjunction with other manufacturers, Wanders work is ever popular, from hanging pedant lights to table lamps:
Philippe Starck (born 1949) is one of the world’s best known modern Product Designers, and thanks to an extremely successful working relationship with Alessi and other manufacturers his work has become accessible to many, with perhaps his most famous piece being the iconic ‘Juicy Salif’ lemon juicer (below). In the lighting world Starck collaborated with Flos in 2003 to create the ‘Miss K T table lamp’.
